When the Lights Go Out

This is something that I have thought about quite a bit for a few reasons. Something that was brought up while reading James Wesley Rawles' book "Patriots" is the danger of power outages and the prison population. Prisons are equipt with generators just in case of such a situation however the problem is that if those generators go out, which they eventually will, what happens to the prisoners? Everything in the prison is controlled electronically so once those electromagnetic locks go out.......you've got prisoners loose!

With me being just a few miles from a state prison.......this has MASSIVE implications for me! We are the nearest town to where they are at so you can bet they will be heading this way.

When you also factor in the nature of the why the electric system is down, you also have other things to worry about. If the grid were to go down with an EMP, you are also talking about your cars not working either. Therefore if you are away from your supplies, you are screwed! This is the reason I always have and suggest to others to always have a day pack in your vehicle with supplies to keep you alive for a few days. That pack should also include weapons to keep you alive as well because depending on where you are.......there could certianly be chaos. With people being as dependent as they are on electricity, they would most likely freak out.

I agree, everyone should have a bug out bag, as well as a couple of routes to get away from where they are if in a highly populated area. The ideal situation would be that one could find land now and set up a home base. If that's not possible then prepare for both, staying where you are and bugging out. We just don't know what is coming, so many possibilities. Found a good meetup group in my area that are exploring all of this.

That's really cool that you found a group in the area. I have yet to find that around here but who knows. I actually have two bags......one of which I keep in my house that is larger and has TONS of stuff in there and a smaller day pack behind the seat of my truch that never leaves the vehicle. In that pack, there is enough to keep me going for a couple of days. Hopefully, that would be enough to keep my going until I got to my good pack. I wish I had the storage in my vehicle to have a large pack in there all the time but my day pack will have to do.

Several years ago, my day pack came in handy because I was stranded for about a day and a half. Had plenty to keep me comfortable until help arrived. Since then, I've added much more stuff in there and it would be enough for me to last about a week if I ration everything accordingly.
